About aoud string sets

There are many different scales of the Aoud and the various used tunings are making it very difficult, nearly impossible to offer standard sets. Some of these trials, which are offered by various producers will definitively be a compromise, you will find listed at the end of this page.

So it became much more important to offer professional sets which are composed from lute strings by Pyramid, Savarez or Aquila. On one side here we have the lute strings by SAVAREZ and PYRAMID which are proved since decades. On the other hand we have the lutes strings from the experimenting Italian producer AQUILA who invented the NYLGUT strings, that comes close to gut in their sound, but they are synthetic. Nylgut is available in the gut color version ( yellow ). but actual in spring 2015 Mimmo Peruffo is experimenting in raising the density of NYLGUT with metals, as he did this before with the „loaded gut strings“. Some first trials of these rubino strings I could try and hear. They are very promisingly. If you are interested to be informed about news, please get in touch with me using this form.

Actual there is a discussion running among aoud players about the tension which should be used on a aoud. The standpoints are varying very much. Of course stringing an instrument ist definitively a very personal thing. Due to my experiences which I got now over 30 years in composing string sets for lutes and the aoud, the following tension areas have been extracted:

  • light           -->  32 – 34 Newton per string – recommended for historical instruments

  • medium     -->  34 – 37 Newton per string

  • high           -->  37 – 39 Newton per string

  • forte          -->  40 - 43 Newton per string, sets for floating bridge

following these groups my set are created. Also my sets are created with a homogeneous tension, which is a result of stringing lutes for over 30 years.

If you do not find your idea under the offered sets, please get in touch to me using this form.

One simple way to change a set by yourself is varying single strings of a given set. The composition of each set is shown in the detail page and the magenta coloured string numbers are the item numbers. Following that compositions you can vary single strings by making ar order of using the single strings of a set which are listed in the box below with a link to the strings detail pages.

For my professional sets composed from lute strings by the producers Pyramid – Savarez – Aquila you have the following options to find them:

  • selection using the category which uses only the scale and Arabic or Turkish tuning
    in one category all sets for one scale are listed
    if you start from the primary category string sets also the sets of other producers are listed

  • search over the item number – there are several attributes which you can use
    the following example will explain one item number.

SO_c_610_M_Ny_P019-K ( old item No. SET OUD P19 )

please note that before NY there is a blankspace

SO – set Aoud

c – note of the highest string

c = arabic tuning
f = iraqi tuning
t = turkish tuning
g = highest string is a g

610 – scale in mm

M – tension

L = light --> 32 – 34 Newton per string
M = medium --> 34 – 37 Newton per string
H = heavy --> 37 – 39 Newton per string
Hfl = very heavy --> >40 Newton per string, sets for floating bridge

Ny – string material

Ny -- Nylon plain & rectified
PVF -- PVF / Carbon / Alliance ( Savarez )
NG -- Nylgut by Aquila
G - pure gut

P – Producer

P = Pyramid
S = Savarez
A = Aquila
L = LaBella

019 set number – P019 / S019 / A019 are comparable sets

-K - set with copperwound strings

Furthermore there are standard sets
